Celebrating the Upcoming Chinese New Year

Shake the Sky Casino is gearing up to ring in next week’s Chinese New Year in style! In the meantime, let’s learn a little about the world’s largest and longest-running celebration.

Here are four fun facts that will help you celebrate properly:

1. Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a 15-day celebration that begins on the first day of the lunar calendar. The precise dates vary each year, but it always begins sometime in January or February. This year, Chinese New Year begins on Jan. 31.

2. In Chinese culture, the color red symbolizes good fortune and joy. During Chinese New Year celebrations you can expect to see lots of red clothing and decorations, to ward off evil spirits and bad fortune. You’ll undoubtedly see lots of red envelopes – these special packets usually contain money and are given to children by their elders. They are also often used as decorations, and are adorned with special gold symbols representing good fortune, wealth, and happiness.

3. Speaking of special symbols, the ‘Fu Symbol’ is also associated with Chinese New Year, and can traditionally be found adorning the entrances of Chinese homes. Signifying good luck or happiness, the symbol is often hung upside down.

4. With its emphasis on luck and good fortune, Chinese New Year is naturally the ideal time for risk takers to place a bet at the race track or the casino. However, before betting make sure to pray to the fortune god, and don red clothing for extra luck!
