My favorite holiday tradition is baking Italian Cookies with my maternal grandmother. My grandma’s parents were immigrants from Italy. When my great grandma passed, she left a cookbook filled with cookie recipes she would make growing up in the small town of Bologna. While we make many different types of Italian Christmas Cookies, my two favorites are: Pizzelle Cookies and Italian Anisette Cookies which both put me in the holiday spirit!

Logan M.
My favorite holiday tradition during the holidays is to gather around my aunt’s house with all my cousins. I come from a large closeknit family. The atmosphere is very loving whilst cracking jokes, playing various games, and just being around the ones who cherish you the most. Plus, the gifts we get each other are usually hilarious!

Thanksgiving Factoids!

h5c_factoids_thanksgiving_blogpostHey High 5-ers, with Thanksgiving being celebrated in the United States today, what are your plans for the holiday weekend… besides playing Gobblers Gone Wild on High 5 Casino?

Did you know that in 2015, 46.9 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more over the Thanksgiving weekend? AAA estimates that tomorrow, 48.7 million Americans will travel to be with family and friends for the holiday. While you begin your preparations for your great feast, check out some Thanksgiving facts below:

1. The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621, however it did not become a holiday until 1863! It took over 200 years and a 17 year campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale, for President Lincoln to implement the holiday.

2.  Forks weren’t the only thing missing from the first Thanksgiving dinner shared between 90 Wampanoag Native Americans and 50 pilgrims…so were turkey, pumpkin pie and delicious cranberry sauce! Yes, that’s right turkey was not served at the first Thanksgiving and neither were pumpkin pies. Historians have reported that venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobsters, eel and fish were mostly likely consumed at the first Thanksgiving along with raw cranberries and pumpkins. The Native Americans and pilgrims used spoons and knives to eat, as the fork wasn’t introduced until 10 years later!

3. Did you know that there are 6 major US States that produce the majority of pumpkins? The USDA reports that in 2015, Illinois, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York produced a combined 753.8 million pounds of pumpkins!

4. Over 50 million people tune their TV’s to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, are you one of them? Is watching the parade a tradition in your house? Here are some interesting facts!

  • The first Thanksgiving Day Parade was launched by employees of Macy’s in 1924 and featured animals from the Central Park Zoo!
  • The first balloon character to appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was Snoopy in 1927! Snoopy has appeared in the parade more than any other character and was designed by Tony Sarg!

5. After watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, do you turn on some football? This year marks 96 years since the first NFL Thanksgiving Day Football Game took place in 1920!

You can’t have Thanksgiving without a turkey, can you? Here are some interesting facts about turkeys:

  •  Turkeys are intelligent, sensitive and highly social animals that create lasting bonds with one another. A wild turkey has the ability to learn the precise details of an area over 1,000 acres in size!
  • A group of turkeys can be called several different things including: a “crop,” “dole,” “gang,” “posse,” and “rafter.”
  • A baby turkey is known as a “polut” or “chick”.
  • A young female turkey is called a “jenny” and a young male turkey is called a “jake”.
  • Did you know only male turkeys can gobble? To announce themselves to female turkeys, male turkeys gobble to assert their dominance.

High 5 Fight Club

Hey High 5-ers, we need your help! We can’t seem to come to an agreement on this…

The question is, which animal would you rather take home with you after a visit to the zoo, a cuddly Red Panda like in Red Panda Palace or a super cool Penguin from the game Cool Loot?

Let’s take a walk down memory lane. Do you remember your first visit to the zoo? Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my! The anticipation of all the different animals you are going to see is keeping you on your toes. Walking through large cast iron gates you’ve entered a world of excitement and wonder.

Now you’re at the zoo and you don’t know where to start your adventure! Will you head to visit the monkeys, the zebras, giraffes or lions first? But what about the polar bears, penguins, and panda bears? Then you can’t forget about the reptiles and elephants! There is so much to see. Good thing you have the whole day!

You walked through the African Plains, learning about the lions, zebras and giraffes, and you stumble upon the Himalayan Highlands. In their lush secluded habitat, you see the cutest little bears poking out of the bamboo greens. These bears looks more like a little fox and a big cat. With their pointy ears and fluffy tail you want to squeeze them, they’re so cute. You look down at the name tag and it reads “Red Pandas”. You remember one of your favorite games, Red Panda Palace, and think to yourself… they’re so much cuter in person! As they frolic in the trees munching on bamboo shoots you decided you NEED to have one of them for a pet!

Your time in the Himalayan Highlands has come to an end and now it’s time to move onto the polar tundra. You see the polar bears playing with their toy balls; throwing them into the water and diving off the ice. The white arctic fox romping through the snow and then you see the cutest penguins ever. They’re jumping and sliding down the arctic icebergs into the frigid water in a competition to see who makes the biggest splash! They remind you of the suave penguins in Cool Loot, and you think to yourself, ‘I need one of them as my sidekick!’. With so many other animals to visit, it’s time to move on from the polar tundra and see what else the zoo has to offer.

After visiting all of the animals, you get to visit the best part of the zoo… the gift shop. While looking at all of the post cards, t-shirts and toys you come across the plush stuffed animal section. Here you see a cute and cuddly red panda, and a cool and collected penguin. Grabbing them both you run over to your spouse and exclaim “I found my souvenirs!”. With big smiles on your faces, you look at each other and the price tags, and they say “Sweetheart, you have to choose one.”

Now it’s time to make your decision, is it a cute and cuddly Red Panda or a super cool Penguin? Comment in the conversation bubble located on the top right of the blog post to let us know!

Employee Spotlight- Johan L.

h5c_employeespotlight_johan_blogpostDid you know High 5 Games not only produces online casino slot games but we produce land based casino slot games as well?

Meet Johan L. Sr. Production Artist who leads one of High 5 Games most brilliant teams in producing the illustrations for our amazing land based slot cabinets such as: Miss Universe: Crowning Moment, Valkyrie Queen, Maggie and the Martians and so much more!

1. How long have you been working with High 5 Games?
I have been working with High 5 Games for 7 years now. I was around the 35th employee, and a few years later, the company grew up to 300!

2. Please tell us what you do, as Sr. Production Artist for High 5 Games?
I mainly do illustration work for land based games in our post production team. But I can do a little bit of animation as well. Production Artists are mixed with Art and technical skills so we can do a little bit of code editing as well.

3. Name the game you are most proud of working on for High 5 Casino and tell us why it’s your favorite and what inspired you?
Our team doesn’t really work on High 5 Casino, but one of my favorite games I worked on for land was Miss Universe: Crowning Moment. Doing the top screen was fun and colorful and I got to meet Miss Universe! On a side note, there is a game my team is working currently for mobile, look out for MAGIC MACAW!

4. How long does it take to create and complete the animations and illustrations for a game? Can you tell us what goes into it?
Once a game is bought by our land based client, ideally we have around 2 to 3 months to do the final illustrations, animations, prototyping and packaging.

5. If you could be a High 5 Casino game character who would you like to be? Why?
Probably the male character from Love U, because I’m nerdy and awkward, and I love science! I love watching videos of Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson

6. What is the hardest part when creating the animation and illustrations for a new game?
The hardest part for is always the concept sketches and color. But once that’s finalized, the details are easy.

7. What is your favorite animation to create?
I don’t specialize in animation, but once in a while I get to do simple ones like sparkles and text wiggling!

8. How did you get involved in animation and illustration?
During high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study but all I knew is I loved art class. So my art teacher suggested School of Visual Arts, and that’s where I studied illustration and I loved it!

9. If you weren’t an artist, what other profession would you have chosen?
A few years after graduating college, I stumbled into my 5th grade year book and underneath my photo we were asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and I wrote Engineer. Guess that was my original plan and I just forgot. Haha!

10. As Sr. Production Artist, what is your favorite part of your job?
Doing art is the obvious answer, but having the privilege to work with friendly, kind, and fun group of people is my favorite part. My commute is 2 hours each way which is torture, but once I get to work, I realize how fun my job is.
